Assistant Teacher
We are looking for more Assistant Teachers to join our team for Summer 2022!
When you hear the word robot, do you smile? Do you get excited when you get to use your hands to build things? Do you find joy in building with kid? Then this is the perfect job for you!
We are especially looking for people who are creative, DIY-lovers, great with kids, and deeply interested in learning more about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math). We need people who can take a hot glue gun to popsicle sticks and cardboard and create something that physically holds up and looks totally awesome all while having a blast!
Our Assistant Teachers come from all kinds of disciplines, including education, sculpture, carpentry, theater, and computer science. In this role you will be working with other teachers to teach a classroom basic engineering concepts and to guide groups of children in building their own robot. We will train you in all the unique skills, tools, and concepts needed for the position.
Requirements
- Must be a graduating high school senior or older
- Are vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19
- Love to make things with your hands (e.g woodworking, sculpture, crafts, set construction, baking, cooking, etc)
- Extremely reliable
- Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills
- Patient and friendly
- Flexible
- Like having fun
- Believe in diversifying the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) classroom
- Own a computer capable of smoothly running Zoom video conferencing app (Brooklyn Robot Foundry will not provide a computer) (virtual only)
- Excellent proficiency at using Zoom app (virtual only)
- Must be able to lift 35 lbs (in-person only)
- Must be able to pass a CPR/First Aid certification (we will offer a class in early June, 2022) (in-person only)
- Must be able to walk 1.5-2 miles per day (in-person only)
Preferred Experience (not required)
- Teaching/leading a classroom
- Working with children in-person (teacher, camp counselor, babysitter, etc.)
- Working with circuits
- Using power tools
- Crafting/making things 3-dimensionally
- Using basic programming software
Location Details
We are hiring teachers for virtual Zoom classes, as well as in-person. In-person classes will be at our Gowanus location (98 4th Street, Suite 106, Brooklyn, New York City). Virtual classes can be conducted from a home or studio space.
Applicants wishing to teach in both in-person and virtual settings should specify this in their cover letter/email.
Schedule
Assistant teachers will work only for the the Summer 2022 session (May 31 – September 2, 2022). This job is seasonal but there may be an opportunity to stay on as a full or part time employee after the summer.
Summer shifts are as follows:
In-Person (Gowanus, Brooklyn)
Shift A: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (1/2 hour lunch break)
Shift B: 10:00 am – 6:30 pm (1/2 hour lunch break)
Virtual (Zoom Videoconferencing)
Shift C: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm EST (up to 2 hour break scheduled during this time)
Shift D: 12:00 pm – 7:30 EST pm (up to 2 hour break scheduled during this time)
Training Info
Our teacher training program will be held between May 31 – June 10, 2022 (mandatory dates: June 7 & 9 to shadow a classroom – either online or in-person). Exact schedule TBD. Additionally, those teachers working at our in-person location will attend a half-day CPR training course provided by Brooklyn Robot Foundry (date TBD).
